2014 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 9,300 times in 2014. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 3 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

NHL Playoff Brackets 2014

The NHL has updated their playoff bracket format beginning with the 2014 Playoffs. The bracket will still have 16 teams, with 8 teams from both the Eastern and Western conferences.

Each conference’s bracket will now be broken up into 2 sections, one for each division. You can look at it like the March Madness Bracket, meaning it is broken up into 4 different brackets. You can see this in the bracket above(each division has it’s own section).

Qualifying and Seeding:

The top 3 teams from each division will automatically qualify and be seeded from 1 to 3 based on their record. The teams with the best record in their conferences will be the overall number 1 seeds. This will take care of the first 12 qualifying teams.

Wild Cards

Two wild card teams from each Conference make up the rest of the bracket. The wild card teams will be the 4 seeds, the bracket above will show them as W1 and W2, which is explained below. Of the remaining teams in each Conference(not division) the top 2 teams will become the wild card teams. The wild card team with the lesser record(W2 in the bracket) will play the overall number 1 seed, the wild card team with the better record(W1) will play the other number one seed.

A strange feature of this, is that a wild card from one division could actually be playing in another division’s section of the bracket.

Once the match ups are determined, the location of the division names in the bracket above could change. The overall number 1 seed in each conference will be at the top of the bracket.

One important thing to note is that teams are NOT re-seeded as they were in the past. This allows you to now be able to run a bracket pick’em pool just like the March Madness Tournament!

5 Steps To Looking 10 Years Younger

By Steve & Becky Holman

Did you know that once you hit 40 years of age, whether you’re a man or a women, your body starts aging FASTER than normal? Studies have shown that without the proper nutrients and exercise, your body will age about 6 months EXTRA for every year that passes. Think about that! If you are 40, that means by the time you hit 44 you will LOOK and FEEL 46. And by the time you reach 60, you will LOOK and FEEL 70 YEARS OLD! We see this every day… just look around you.

Did you know that 90% of people over the age of 35 lose enough muscle every year to burn off an additional 4 pounds of body fat? That means you not only lose the only thing on your body that creates shape, tone, and strength—you also gain more fat every year, even if your calories stay the same.

Did you know that all of this is reversible at any age? That there are specific ways to move, eat, and think that tell your brain to STOP this rapid aging process… and even SLOW IT DOWN to the point where you’re aging less than a year for every year? That means you can look younger at 40 than you do at 35… or if you’re like Becky and me, younger at 50+ than we did at 40!

This is not fantasy talk. This does not require a boatload of anti-aging drugs, supplements, or gimmicks. And, this works for anyone, male or female, and works at any age. 35, 45, 55, 65, 75… you name it. The biology is exactly the same.

My years as editor-in-chief at Iron Man Magazine have allowed me to peer into the secret routines of the anti-aging experts. Over the years, both Becky and I have picked up SO many tips, tricks, and strategies that have allowed us to literally reverse the aging process, at least from a cellular level. That means our bodies look, feel, and MOVE younger than our chronological age.

We’ve taught this System to countless men and women over the years, and it always begins with these 5 key principles you must apply in order to STOP the rapid onset of aging that’s going on right now, reverse it, and begin “aging backwards” by restoring your body’s natural youth hormones.

That said, we have to warn you: What you are about to hear may go against all the conventional diet and exercise advice you’ve been hearing. That’s because the world has, to be utterly frank, gone soft! “Core training”, hot yoga, cycling classes, tai chí—all of these are just fine, but they won’t slow your aging, and they certainly will never shape your muscles or burn off stubborn body fat. No way!

The Fat Loss Factor

In this short weight loss presentation I will teach you a somewhat unusual weight loss strategy that can help you get a flatter belly in under 7 days, while still enjoying the foods you love. This is the first tip that I always teach my patients here in Fishers, IN. And is the same tip that helped one of my patients whom I’m most proud of, (Lori) lose 2 inches from her belly, lose 8 lbs in only 9 days, lose 2 inches from each thigh, lose ¾ of an inch from each arm, and drop 3 dress sizes (At the age of 30, she now wears a smaller dress than she did in high school!).

Lori ultimately lost 90 pounds and I’ll share with you 1 tip that helped her get there. I can’t leave this video up for long, so be sure to watch it from beginning to end while it’s still here. Please note: If you leave the page and come back, the video will automatically restart at the beginning.

Thanks and enjoy!

Feminist Games

as a kid i loved football. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzvYTzX6yW8 along with hockey and the occasional trip to Volcanoes Stadium, football was how i spend a lot of time with my dad. everyone living in the house (except my mom) had a team that they rooted for; i rooted for the Pittsburgh Steelers, brother1 worshipped the Packers, and brother2 and my dad supported the SF 49ers.   my dad always gave me a hard time about choosing the Steelers—i never fully admitted that i chose the team as a 10 year old because i liked the colors of a winning (’79) team in the Madden ’99 football videogame for N64. when the team seemed to be having a good run up to and through their superbowl wins in 2006 and 2009, you can imagine how happy it made a kid-turned-teenager that her aesthetic preferences ensured she was often rooting for the winning team. i only…

Let’s talk about Facebook shall we?

Oh for the love of...me

I’ll admit it…I’m a defender of Facebook. I like it. I like seeing pictures of my grandkids and keeping up with what is going on with them. I like keeping up on the lives of my friends and what their grandchildren are doing. I like the positive news items and the helpful way it reaches out to millions of people at a moments notice. I like finding friends from way back when and touching base again…not enough to actually make an effort to get together or anything but I’m nosy…I like knowing what’s going on in the world.

But I’m finding there’s no real “etiquette” when it comes to Facebook. It’s kind of anonymous…but not really. We’re not face to face so you don’t have to see my initial reaction to your post and I have time to think about how I’m going to (or not going to respond). Kind…

Use It or Lose It! Barbecue Chicken Tacos

Use It or Lose It! Barbecue Chicken Tacos

Looks good. Yum.

bbq-chicken-tacos Do you ever overcook chicken breasts? It can happen in a flash, right?  Do you like the dark meat, but are not such a fan of the white, or vice versa? I’m not touching that one . Do you have a dozen jars of random preserves in the fridge, each with two or three tablespoons languishing in the bottom? If not, can I come over and borrow some fridge space? Do you like tacos? Who doesn’t? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, have I got the recipe for you. Read on, MacDuff.

I invented this recipe last summer, when I was visiting friends down in Maryland. With both parents working busy full-time jobs and a 2 year-old daughter to raise, weeknight dinners had to be simple: my friend confessed to me that they were living on grilled chicken and salad every night of the week and that…

[Recipe 1] SLOW-ROASTED LAMB SHOULDER with ROASTED GARLIC and POTATOES transforms into
[Recipe 2] 20-MINUTE LAMB GYROS with ROASTED GARLIC SAUCE

I’ve been the quintessential Melbourne chick lately, with the last two Saturdays spent rummaging through markets and pop-ups. The run-down: Gorman home pop-up, Latin American Festival, Design Files Open House and Maribyrnong Makers Market. Living in Melbourne is exhausting!
A chock-a-block Saturday preceded by five days of work is invariably followed by bedlam, with our house looking positively ransacked. So… with the washing machine on high rotation, and mountains of detritus to sort on a recent Sunday, I decided to slow-cook a chunk of lamb, a process I love as the meat can be ignored for the day while it does its thing. The result is an impressive-looking feast, with tender and juicy meat that literally falls away from the bone after a light prod with a…
